Propane Safety Month: Tips Every TX Household Should Know
Propane powers a lot of life in the Greater Houston area, from backyard grills and pool heaters to whole-home heating systems and standby generators. It’s safe, efficient, and reliable, but like any fuel, it should always be handled correctly. Since June is Propane Safety Month, we thought it’d be the perfect time to walk through a few things every propane-powered household should know.
Know What Propane Smells Like
Propane is naturally odorless, so manufacturers add a chemical that gives it a strong, unpleasant smell. Most folks describe it as rotten eggs, skunk spray, or sulfur. It’s not subtle, and that’s the point. Knowing the smell could one day make all the difference for your family in the event of a leak.
What to Do If You Smell Gas
If you ever catch a whiff of that unmistakable odor inside or near your home, take it seriously. Here’s what to do:
- Get all people and pets out of the area immediately.
- Extinguish any open flames if you can do so safely.
- Don’t flip light switches, use electronics, or start vehicles near the area.
- Shut off the gas supply at the tank by turning the main valve clockwise (to the right).
- Once you’re a safe distance away, call Green’s Blue Flame or 911.
- Don’t return to the home until a qualified technician has inspected and/or repaired your system and confirmed it’s safe.
Walking through these steps now, before there’s ever an issue, makes them second nature if the moment ever comes where you may have a propane leak.

Pick a Family Meeting Spot
Just like you’d plan for a fire, your household should have a designated outdoor meeting spot in case of a leak. Choose a location that’s a safe distance away from the house, the tank, and the road. Make sure every family member knows exactly where to go.
Safe Handling of Propane Cylinders
A few quick reminders for smaller propane cylinders commonly used for gas grills and patio heaters:
- Always store and transport cylinders upright.
- Never store them indoors, in a garage, or in a hot vehicle.
- Keep cylinders away from direct sunlight and high-traffic areas.
- Check for rust, dents, or damage before use, and replace any cylinder that looks compromised.
- Make sure valves are fully closed when cylinders aren’t in use.
